Serving Tennis is committed to providing training and development opportunities to allow coaches to develop within our organisation. We offer regular apprenticeship positions, linked to both the LTA and Sport Hampshire & IOW, and also offer mentoring to already-qualified coaches who have previously worked without support and guidance.

The majority of our coaching positions are salaried, providing guaranteed income and job security. We do however work with self-employed coaches from time-to-time.

The average time a young coach spends within our organisation is 4-5 years, and within that time, everyone gains a valuable learning experience, and benefits from a quality support structure. Areas of development include technical & tactical coaching, customer service, duty management, stringing, schools development and community outreach.

Roles are primarily based at our main facility, the Totton & Eling Tennis Centre, however, a large proportion of hours can also be spent at our other locations, including in Eastleigh and Southampton. Due to the number of school links we have, there is also a requirement to work in areas surrounding our facilities.

Apprenticeship Scheme

Salary £8,000 p.a.

Full-time position for 12 months, with possible career progression thereafter

The Tennis Apprenticeship scheme exists to provide young people, usually already tennis players, with the opportunity to work within a community tennis environment, gaining invaluable experience within the field of coaching, business and administration. The position is linked directly to the LTA's "Coach Apprenticeship Scheme", and can be available at Level 2 or 3, depending on the candidate's current qualification.

Training and development is of the highest priority and the scheme is designed to provide continual learning for the successful candidate. The apprenticeship will last for a minimum period of 1 year (subject to successful completion of probationary period), however, there may be an opportunity to gain a further position within the operation thereafter. Furthermore, during the 12 month period, the apprentice will start working towards LTA qualifications (Level 1-3).

This position is the ideal starting point for any young person keen to pursue a career in tennis coaching & management. Necessarily, as this job represents the first career stage, a proportion of time will be spent on maintenance and cleaning.

At the end of the Apprenticeship period (18-24 months) a qualified, registered Level 2 Coach working within our programme can expect to earn £14,000-£15,000 per annum. This figure then increases proportionately according to experience (and skill!), making this an excellent alternative to univesity. Within 3 years of starting the apprenticeship, a salary of £16-18,000 is more than achievable.

This position does involve a degree of travel around local schools and between Totton, Southampton & Eastleigh, and therefore an applicant with access to his / her own transport is essential.
